Projekt ROTCUT – „From Linear to Rotary Cutting of Hardwood“
Project description and aim
Nowadays, the forest composition in temperate climate zones is changing. The broad-leaved species are replacing the needle bearing species. The project ROTCUT was established to support industrial development and hardwood disintegration research and builds on the successfully completed project HARDIS.
The goal of the ROTCUT project is to theoretically and experimentally analyze the rotary cutting of hardwood. The project will consist of the experiments on the novel device located in Tulln (https://youtu.be/akIgZ6AQTpI), simplifying the analysis of linear high-speed wood cutting. Project leader, Mendel University in Brno, provides the CNC wood machining centre where the validation experiments will be done. The mechanisms during the cutting process will be recorded by a high-speed camera of up to 200 000 frames per second. Finally, the Brno University of Technology scientists will use force measurements and video recordings to establish the Finite Element Method model.
The pre-test to prove the experimental method was held at the Mendel University in Brno. The first results imply that the data acquired can serve for complex cutting model establishment. In the past, a force prediction model for linear cutting (Dvoracek et al., 2021) was developed. The project ROTCUT targets more common rotational cutting, which is much more challenging to analyze. Together with the previously developed model, the experimentally obtained forces provide a good foundation for future research of wood cutting and international cooperation.
